VIVO ENERGY GHANA ADVANCES CLIMATE ACTION WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY TRAINING FOR TEACHERS IN ACCRA

In a landmark initiative to drive climate action and sustainability, Vivo Energy Ghana, in partnership with United Way Ghana, has launched a comprehensive Renewable Energy Project focused on training for Teachers and young learners from selected schools in Accra. This program, facilitated by experts from Academic City University College, represents a crucial step in equipping educators and young learners with the knowledge and skills to champion renewable energy and energy conservation in their classrooms and communities.

In the inaugural phase of this environmental sustainability project, twelve teachers comprising 6 teachers from La Enobal Basic School and 3 each from La Presby Primary A&B Schools, received an in-depth training on Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Learning Modules, with a particular focus on solar power.

Under the theme “Building a Sustainable Future,” this project aims to provide educators and students with hands-on experiences through workshops, projects, and field trips. The goal is to cultivate a generation of young learners who are knowledgeable about sustainable energy solutions and motivated to act as green ambassadors within their communities.

NYANSAPO SCHOLARSHIP ASSESSMENT

The United Way Ghana Team conducted a needs assessment for students of Tinkong MA JHS, Tinkong SDA Primary, Nyame Bekyere Basic, Tinkong Presby School, Otariso Basic School, and St. Paul’s Methodist School, in the Eastern Region to select those who meet the criteria for the Nyansapo Scholarship project. This beneficiary mapping enables the team to effectively outline the needs to be accomplished to achieve the project goals, and provide a baseline for future assessment.

The Nyansapo Scholarship project is an initiative of United Way Ghana with funding from the Riedman Family, who believe that every child deserves and must exercise their right to education. Over the last 18 years, the scholarship project has provided disadvantaged young learners with necessary supplies required to keep them in school and continue their education. The scholarship project has benefited 1,343 learners from 6 schools, and over 650 parents/guardians.

This year, the Nyansapo Scholarship project will support 90 children from Tinkong MA JHS, Tinkong SDA Primary, Nyame Bekyere Basic, Tinkong Presby School, Otariso Basic School, and St. Paul’s Methodist Schools, with basic school supplies such as uniforms, shoes, bags, exercise books and stationaries, amongst others which will help to promote school attendance and improve learning for the young learners.

PRUDENTIAL LIFE INSURANCE GHANA AND UNITED WAY GHANA HOST EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT EVENT IN ACCRA, KUMASI, AND NEW TAKORADI

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana and United Way Ghana organized an Employee Engagement event with students of Pig Farm Basic School in Accra, Ayeduase R/C Basic School in Kumasi, and Poasi Methodist Basic School and Nana Baidoo Bonsu Basic School in New Takoradi, as part of activities on the Literacy and Mentorship Project. The Literacy and Mentorship project represents a significant investment in the future of students in Ghana, as the project has provided Reading Centres within these schools, reaching about 1000 students over the last year.

The Literacy and Mentorship Project which is being implemented to improve the learning outcomes of young learners by empowering them through literacy and mentorship, hosted this Employee Engagement event within these schools to provide staff of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana the opportunity to engage with these students in mentoring sessions and also facilitate literacy competitions between the students. This employee engagement event was part of activities scheduled to commemorate the decade of excellence of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana.

Pre-assessment of the pupils before the commencement of the project showed that only 17% of the 716 pupils assessed could read and comprehend at their grade levels across all locations. However, within the last nine months of engagement, the project has recorded an increase in this data to 53%. At Pig Farm Basic School, only 25% of the 145 students assessed before commencement could read and comprehend, but as at the Employee Engagement Event, this number has increased to 81%.
