Nelson Mandela

On 18 July each year — the day Nelson Mandela was born — the UN urges individuals around the world to mark Nelson Mandela International Day by making a difference in their communities. Everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better. Mandela Day is therefore an annual reminder to take action and inspire change to the service of humanity, in honour of one of Africa’s greatest leaders.

This positive call to action resonates with one of the founding ethos of United Way Ghana - a dedication to improving lives and strengthening communities where we live.

At United Way Ghana, we reflect on the spirit and letter of the UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/64/13 that instituted Nelson Mandela Day with a renewed sense of commitment to our core mandate of working with our partners to create real, lasting social change.

Over the last 15 years, our social impact programmes and community driven initiatives have improved the livelihoods of thousands of people through education, health and financial stability - building blocks for good quality of life. With the support, expertise and resources of partner organizations and volunteers that share a similar passion with United Way Ghana, we are transforming communities to become healthier, better informed and more productive.

Mandela was passionate about children and education. He recognized education as a great vehicle that brings equality of opportunities and empowers individuals to reach their full potential. Inspired by Mandela’s legacy in education and driving positive impact, we introduced our Improving Basic Education (IBE) programme with the objective of improving the accessibility and delivery of quality education at the basic level.

Under IBE, United Way Ghana has implemented sustainable solutions including the Nyansapo Scholarship Scheme, provision of quality textbooks and reading materials, capacity building initiatives for teachers, sensitizing parents and community leaders to support quality education and engaging school management on good institutional governance. IBE has positively impacted over 13,000 people since it was established in 2012.

“Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world.” - Nelson Mandela

Through IBE, United Way Ghana is contributing to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on Education that advocates for inclusive and equitable quality education to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. With quality education being an integral enabler of sustainable development, United Way Ghana’s efforts are helping the country to achieve the SDG 4 targets of improving access to quality education and making schools safer and enabling, to shape the future of young children positively.

Today, we are humbled by the over 30,000 people impacted by our community initiatives and 80 NGO affiliates who shared our vision of change over the last decade and a half. Also, immense gratitude for the support and trust of more than 150 corporate and individual donors who supported our cause. We couldn’t have touched a life without the dedication of more than 3,000 volunteers, who have given more than 12,000 hours of their time for common good.

To them we say, you bring the very essence of Nelson Mandela Day to life every day. In the spirit of Mandela Day, United Way Ghana invites you to be part of the change makers, hand raisers and problem solvers. Mark this Mandela Day by making a difference in the lives of young children. Give, advocate, and volunteer for a cause you care deeply about.

To mark Mandela Day, United Way Ghana is raising funds to support our IBE project. Give to support our life changing impact to transform the lives of young children. Double the impact by urging your friends, family and colleagues to donate towards our Mandela for Education campaign – an appropriate tribute to the South African leader and an investment into our future.
