United Way Ghana and Prudential Life Insurance Ghana Signs Memorandum of Understanding on the Implementation of the PruLife Climate Action Project in Chorkor, Accra

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, a leading insurance provider, is pleased to announce a donation of USD 100,000 under its Climate & Health Resilience Fund (CHRF) to address pressing environmental challenges in Chorkor.

The fund, established by the Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential in Africa and Asia, is designed to help markets adapt to the impacts of climate change on health.

Implemented by United Way Ghana, the Climate Action Project aims to address severe health, environmental and climate-related threats such as coastal erosion, flooding, cholera, poor drainage and waste management systems and pollution. Targeted interventions, including environmental education, tree planting by school clubs, and waste management initiatives are set to be implemented to promote long-term climate resilience.

Speaking at a brief signing ceremony, Mrs. Jane Dornukuor Mingle, CEO of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, expressed the company’s dedication to sustainable development which is aligned with its purpose, “to be partners for every life and protectors for every future.”

Mrs. Jane also mentioned that as a long-term life and health insurer, healthy communities are important for Prudential’s business model, which the company supports with projects like these as well as its thought leadership on climate and health resilience. She was optimistic that this project will make a meaningful impact in Chorkor by promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.

“Most recently, the government has increased efforts to curb the spread of cholera within Greater Accra and Central Regions, and this project is strategically designed to promote access to proper water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructures in 100 homes and a community school.” She noted.

Similarly, Ms. Faustina Abbey, Executive Director of United Way Ghana, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing climate change. “Climate change is a pressing issue, and tackling it requires a collaborative approach. We are excited to partner with Prudential Life Insurance Ghana to engage local stakeholders and empower the Chorkor community with the resources and knowledge needed to mitigate environmental risks. This project will promote effective sanitation and waste management, promote advocacy that will foster behavioral change amongst the community members, and also curb the prevalence of life-threatening diseases.”

The Climate Action Project will also involve community members, schools, and local leaders in efforts to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. By combining expertise, resources, and local engagement, Prudential Life Insurance Ghana and United Way Ghana seek to create a lasting impact that extends beyond Chorkor to inspire broader climate action across Ghana.

United Way Ghana and Prudential Life Insurance Ghana Launches the PRU Climate Action Project in Chorkor

This March, United Way Ghana and Prudential Life Insurance Ghana launched the PRU Climate Action Project in Chorkor, marking a major step toward environmental sustainability and community development.

The event gathered key partners, community leaders, and stakeholders who reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the project’s success. From local chiefs and school authorities to our esteemed partners, the message was clear—collaboration is the key to long-term impact.

"This project is a testament to our commitment to working on mitigating the effects of climate change in deprived seaside communities like Chorkor, especially with the prevalence of diseases such as cholera and malaria. We are committed to making Chorkor a model for climate resilience. This is a testament to what we can achieve when businesses, NGOs, and communities come together for a common cause." - Mrs. Jane Mingle, CEO of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana.

As part of the Prudential Life Insurance Ghana Climate Action Project Launch, we donated essential materials to schools and the broader Chorkor community. These resources, including sanitation tools such as wheelbarrows, shovels, cutlass, brooms, hand washing stations, waste bins, and a tricycle for plastic waste recycling, all of which will empower students and residents to take active roles in keeping their environment clean and promote personal hygiene.

The highlight of the day was the groundbreaking ceremony for a brand-new washroom facility at the Chemunaa Cluster of Schools. This infrastructure will improve sanitation, hygiene, and overall well-being for hundreds of students within the school cluster.

Queen of Chorkor, Naa Adorkor Gyamfi 1, who received the items on behalf of the community and schools, expressed her gratitude for the initiative, "Good sanitation is key to a healthy environment. We are grateful for this investment in our community and our children's future."

United Way Ghana and Prudential Life Insurance Ghana Organizes Rally to Create Awareness Following the PRU Climate Action Launch in Chorkor

Following the official launch, we took to the streets for a community rally, engaging residents, schoolchildren, and local leaders in conversations about climate action and sustainability. With banners, placards, and enthusiastic voices, we spread awareness on waste management, ending open defecation, hand hygiene, and the importance of protecting our environment.

The energy was inspiring, proving that real change starts with community-driven efforts. The Prudential Life Insurance Ghana Climate Action Project is not just about infrastructure—it’s about instilling a culture of environmental responsibility.

Standard Chartered Bank Ghana and United Way Ghana Distribute Meal Packages as Muslims Break Fast during the Ramadan Month

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from food, drink, smoking, and sinful behavior. The fast is meant to foster self-discipline, spiritual reflection, and empathy for those who are less fortunate. It’s also a time for increased prayer, reading the Quran, and acts of charity.

As part of events to commemorate this year's Ramadan, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana hosted an Iftar event for over 400 worshippers at Cantonment Police Mosque, Cantonment, Accra. This event which was coordinated by United Way Ghana provided an opportunity for team members to share beautiful moments with our Muslim brothers and sisters during this holy month, providing meal packages as they break their fast.

May all our prayers during this month of Ramadan be granted by Allah.
